Overview
During the first few weeks of lock down, many artists were left with feelings of uncertainty, confusion and a sense of mourning for opportunities that were being missed as a result of Covid-19. Some faced periods of ‘artists block’ accompanied by a growing pressure to produce work, given the fact that there was now a lot of ‘spare time’.
In the weeks and months that followed, thoughts and feelings were starting to be processed and translated in the minds of creatives. Uncertainty, loss, unrest and gratitude were beginning to manifest themselves through paint, pencil, clay and metal. The expression of feelings and emotions were turning into tangible pieces of art with narratives that came from the soul of each artist.
Curated by BBVA founder Merissa Hylton, ‘Art On Lock’ was created to allow each artist to bring their story to life through their work, answer the call of the creative mind and showcase the stories and experiences of Black British Artists during a period of restriction and uncertainty.
